WOW ~ Word of the Week ~ Clerked

Clerked (verb)

Soothed, funned, imposed on. The cull will not be clerked; i.e. the fellow will not be imposed on by fair words.

Who better to illustrate this slang than poor Mr. Knightley, whose expressions when dealing with Emma always seem to say, “I will not be clerked.”

“Surprises are foolish things. The pleasure is not enhanced, and the inconvenience is often considerable.”
