Artist Marcus Stone captured the wistful, yearning expression that often accompanies those stuck biding their time. An illustrator for the books of Charles Dickens and Anthony Trollope, Stone’s early works dealt with history and his fictional commissions. After his election as Associate at the Royal Academy, his focus shifted more to sentiment: the charmingly mundane and love. Several of his paintings capture the essence of waiting: from anticipation to impatience to resignation.
